A Brief History of Holy Resurrection
In 1910, the first Armenians began to arrive in South Milwaukee looking for work in the local factories.  As the population grew, so did the need for religious services. A small group of South Milwaukee Armenians formed a board of trustees in 1912 to conduct services in St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
After WWI, many Armenian men traveled back to their homeland, returning with wives and prospective brides for their friends. Thus, the Armenian population in South Milwaukee continued to grow.
A meeting was called by the Armenian elders in 1924 in Franke's Hall.  There they organized a building fund committee composed of thirteen devoted members.  The committee purchased the property at 909 Michigan Avenue, the former St. Luke's Episcopal Church
in October of 1924.
The church grew and prospered for thirty six years.
On the fateful day of February 7, 1960, a fire destroyed
the church and alter.  The membership voted to construct a new church and on April 15, 1962 the new Soorp Haroutune Church is consecrated.
"Soorp Haroutune" is directly translated to Holy Resurrection,
and remains a proud beacon in the community of
South Milwaukee, WI.
